CDC guidance on physical activity intensity commonly cites brisk walking somewhere in the 2.5 to 4 mph range, depending on the walker's fitness level, as a standard example of moderate-intensity exercise.
Pace alone doesn't give calories directly, but it's the main input into one. Researchers rate activities using MET values, short for metabolic equivalents, and the widely used Compendium of Physical Activities (originally compiled by Barbara Ainsworth and colleagues, updated periodically since the 1990s) lists walking as running from around 3 METs at a casual pace up to nearly 5 at a brisk one. Faster pace generally means a higher MET value and therefore more calories burned per minute at the same body weight.
This page intentionally stops short of doing that calorie math itself. Nothing about the math cares whether the activity was a walk, a hike with elevation gain, or a slow bike ride. Enter whatever distance and time you tracked and the calculator returns the same four numbers regardless of how you covered the ground.
CDC materials on physical activity intensity generally describe brisk walking, roughly 2.5 to 4 miles per hour depending on fitness level, as a common example of moderate-intensity activity. A slower stroll usually falls below that threshold.
It's a partial signal at best. Hills, heat, surface and how loaded down you are all change pace without changing effort proportionally, so two walks at the same speed can represent very different workloads.
Yes, just enter the distance and time the treadmill display shows. Treadmill distance readouts are generally close but not perfectly matched to GPS-measured outdoor routes, so treat the comparison as approximate.
It can slow the pace for the same effort level, since you're managing extra weight, stops and distractions. Comparing a stroller walk against a solo walk on pace alone isn't quite apples to apples.
